Additional bins

Blue

If, after compacting your recyclable waste, you regularly find that your blue bin is full before collection day, you may need to order an additional blue bin (1 only per household, cost £50.17). Excess recyclable waste can also be taken to a Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Purple

If, after compacting your recyclable waste, you regularly find that your purple bin is full before collection day, you may need to order an additional purple bin (1 only per household, cost £50.17). Excess recyclable waste can also be taken to a Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Brown

You may have a large garden and find that your 240 litre brown bin is regularly filled to capacity. If this is the case, you may need to order an additional brown bin (1 only per household, cost £50.17). Excess garden waste can also be taken to a Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Grey

Due to national targets and local policy, you may not be eligible to receive an additional grey bin even though you are willing to pay for one. The current cost is £50.17.

Please continue to use all of your recycling bins. This should allow you to use your grey bin appropriately.

You may qualify for an additional grey bin if:

  • you live in a household with 5 or more people
  • 1 or more of the residents has a medical condition and additional space is required

An assessment may be carried out by council staff to see if you meet the criteria.

Please note: Grey bins can only be ordered over the phone.

If purchasing a bin on behalf of a group of residents

If you are a landlord, housing association or property factor, you may be issued with a new or refurbished large bin of a similar specification. This supports North Ayrshire Council's aim to reuse and reduce waste as much as possible.

New home

If you move into a property where the previous owner has removed bins, you will need to order and pay for new ones. It is up to you to raise this issue with the previous owner.

Householders in new developments will be required to purchase a grey, blue, purple and brown bin.

Replacement bin

If your bin is damaged, or missing, you can request a replacement (charges may apply).

If the bin or container is damaged by us or has fallen into a vehicle, we will normally have noted this and will action a replacement.

You can arrange for removal of your damaged bin, which should be emptied of any contents prior to its removal.

If you believe that your bin is missing, there will be no charge for a replacement bin although we may ask you some supplementary questions to ensure we have all of the details.

Please note: Missing bin replacements can only be ordered over the phone

Bin Lid Locks

Commercial 660, 1100 and 1280 litre wheeled bins are fitted with a lid lock as standard.  We do not provide locks for 140, 240 and 360 litre plastic wheeled bins but they are available to purchase from a range of online suppliers. Please note that bins must be unlocked on your day of collection to facilitate emptying.

Responsibility

The responsibility and therefore liability for all bins, whether purchased or provided as replacements, remains with the householder. Businesses are responsible for replacing their bins should they go missing or are vandalised.
