Included in your Council Tax bill is the charges for:

  • your water supply services
  • your waste water collection services

Both of these services are provided by Scottish Water.

Scotland’s water is vital to our everyday lives, and Scottish Water handles caring for it.

Public owned Scottish Water invests every penny into protecting the nation's resource. It is your water, for your life as it is owned by the Scottish public.

The charges you pay allow Scottish Water to operate and improve:

  • water and waste water services
  • infrastructure in communities across Scotland

These charges apply to every household which has a connection to the public water supply and/or the public waste water network.

These charges are based on your Council Tax Band shown on your bill, even if you receive a Council Tax Reduction. Some Council Tax exemptions and discounts will also apply. This includes single occupancy or if you are a student.

For more details about these charges visit the Scottish Water website.

Low-income households

If you are a low income household you may be eligible for the Council Tax Reduction Scheme. It helps people on a low income pay all, or part of their Council Tax. This doesn’t cover water and sewerage charges, you must pay these yourself.

If you are a low income household already in receipt of Council Tax Reduction, you don’t need to reapply. Any entitlement to reduction will be in your Council Tax annual demand notice.

Setting Council Tax bands

The Ayrshire Valuation Joint Board decides which Band your home falls into. They are independent from the Council.

To ask, or appeal, about the banding of your house, contact Ayrshire Valuation Joint Board.

Visit our discounts and exemptions page to find out if you’re eligible to pay less, your property is exempt from charges and for more information on Disabled Person’s Band Reduction.
