Speech and language therapy
NHS Ayrshire and Arran provides assessment, treatment and support for children and young people who have difficulties with speech, language or communication, with eating, drinking and swallowing through Speech and Language Therapy.
Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) do this by working in partnership with parents and carers, alongside other professionals such as teachers, health visitors and doctors. Partnership working is essential to the work we do.
There are a few reasons why communication matters:
- learning - early spoken language is the most important factor influencing literacy levels at age 11
- behaviour - studies show higher levels of behaviour challenges amongst people identified with communication needs
- employment - unmet communication needs are linked to long term unemployment, especially in young men
- human's rights - children's communication rights are enshrined in Scots law
The Children and Young People's Speech and Language Service in North Ayrshire aims to be as accessible to families as possible.
If a family has a concern about their child's or young person's speech, language or communication, they can contact our team through our dedicated helpline or by accessing in person drop ins:
- the North Ayrshire Speech and Language Therapy helpline (open every Wednesday from 1pm to 4pm), contact 07833 233 942 to speak with an experienced Speech and Language Therapist
- to request a virtual or in person drop in session, please text your child's name, date of birth, your email and your preference of virtual or in person appointment to 07833 233 942
- download the NHS Ayrshire and Arran application via Apple App Store or Google Play Store
Some children may need additional support from speech and language therapy. This can involve an in-depth assessment and follow-up plan from the team.
