What Trading Standards do

Trading Standards provide advice to:

  • local business to assist with legislation compliance
  • consumers regarding their rights
  • consumers to resolve disputes, through our partners Advice Scotland

Trading Standards enforce the law across a range of subject areas including:

  • age restricted products
  • agriculture
  • animal health and welfare
  • fair trading, including pricing, descriptions of goods, digital content and services, terms and conditions
  • petrol and fireworks storage
  • intellectual property (for example, counterfeiting)
  • product safety - the Office for Product Safety Standards provides product recalls and alerts guidance
  • weights and measures
