NORTH Ayrshire Council will next week consider whether to grant an extra bank holiday on Monday, June 15

At a meeting of Cabinet on Tuesday, elected members will discuss the Scottish Government’s proposals for the extra day holiday to mark Scotland’s participation in the men’s football World Cup.

The report outlines the logistics and financial implications of the additional days’ holiday.

Councillors will learn that it will cost approximately £73,000 to cover overtime. The Head of Education will also have to formally write to the Scottish Government to obtain approval for one less teaching day.

The report recommends that Councillors agree to the holiday.

Quote: There is a great deal of anticipation and excitement around the World Cup in the summer. While some of us are old enough to remember previous campaigns, this is likely to be the first World Cup that the Scotland’s men team have been involved in for the latest generation of supporters. It is a hugely significant sporting moment and the Scottish Government has recognised that by granting this public holiday. It coincides with our opening game against Haiti, and a holiday would allow everyone in North Ayrshire to properly enjoy the match and hopefully, the celebrations afterwards.”

His Majesty King Charles has approved the Scottish Government’s request by Royal Proclamation.

Scotland’s first game against Haiti takes place at 2am on Sunday 14 June. Scotland’s men last appeared in a World Cup in 1998.
