Warning over ‘wave watching’ during Storm Eowyn

Strong and powerful waves

There have been reports of people putting their lives at risk by ‘wave watching’ during today’s storm.

Residents have been parking their cars at coastal locations across North Ayrshire to take photographs of waves and the stormy weather.

This is a dangerous practice and could lead to injury as the spray could contain rocks or other dangerous materials.

Powerful waves can be unpredictable, there can be sudden surges – caused by high winds and low pressure - and debris carried in the water could sweep people off their feet.

There is also a risk that people can be dragged out to sea.

Conditions remain dangerous and a Met Office red weather warning is in place until 5pm today, meaning there is a risk of flying debris, power cuts and damage to buildings. We advise residents to stay safe and stay at home.
