Silver success for Lockhart

Lockhart Campus has been recognised for making good progress towards embedding the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child into their ethos and curriculum.
The Silver Rights Respecting Schools accreditation is a significant milestone to celebrate how Lockhart Campus is putting children and young people’s rights into the heart of everything that they do.
North Ayrshire Council Cabinet Member for Education and Young People, Councillor Margaret Johnson, shares: “I am delighted that Lockhart Campus has become the latest North Ayrshire school to achieve the Rights Respecting School Silver Award.
“The campus joins others such as Largs Early Years Centre, Springside Primary School, West Kilbride Primary School and St John Ogilvie Primary School who have all progressed to silver in the last year.
“Lockhart are an excellent example of how the running of the school centres around nurturing and respecting the rights of every pupil. None of which would be possible without the hard work of Headteacher, Wendy Fenton, and her dedicated team.”
Assessed at the end of 2025, the silver accreditation has been reached following a number of actions and initiatives developed alongside the Rights Respecting Schools Steering group – with pupil representation from right across the school.
Areas of Rights Respecting Schools (Silver Award) success include:
- centring the curriculum and learner voice around the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child
- actively encouraging participation via several other Youth Voice initiatives such as the Pupil Council and other groups, Junior Road Safety Officers, and ECO Committee
- utilisation of alternative formats for voting and feedback collation in the school, including the use of photographs, switches, visual supports and Augmentative and Alternative Communication devices
- nurturing the ongoing value of twelve Developing the Young Workforce initiatives in the school
- co-creation of the school values of Nurture, Respect, Courage and Ambition alongside young people
- targeted sports and dance sessions delivered in partnership with KA Leisure and North Ayrshire Active Schools, following pupil feedback
- development of a range of supportive initiatives for parents and carers who are able to learn about support available and gain qualifications too
Young People’s Champion, Councillor Chloé Robertson, has also welcomed the news, adding:
Quote: Gaining silver Rights Respecting Schools accreditation is a brilliant example of how Lockhart Campus champions the Council’s Wellbeing priority, ensuring wellbeing is at the heart of local life while removing barriers for learners and tackling inequalities to provide positive outcomes for all school leavers. Well done to Lockhart pupils and staff alike on achieving this momentous milestone.

Lockhart Headteacher Wendy Fenton shared how proud she was of all the staff and pupils for gaining the award and emphasised that children’s rights are at the core of decisions made in Lockhart. The headteacher said: “We will continue to embed children’s rights as we start on our journey for Gold! The young people have already got lots of ideas on how to further improve our campus.”
The school will now set their sights on achieving Rights Respecting Schools Gold status – stay tuned for updates.
