School celebrates 50th anniversary

Staff and pupils at a North Ayrshire school are burying a time capsule as part of celebrations marking its 50th anniversary.
Skelmorlie Primary school turns 50 this year and the time capsule will contain:
- a letter from each class and Early Years for future children, explaining what it is like to be a pupil in their class in 2026. This will include a mixture of writing and drawing
- class photographs showing the children as well as their classroom environment and
- a letter from the Headteacher, addressed to future staff and pupils.
The time capsule will remain buried until 2076 for future pupils to discover.
Earlier today (Wednesday, 1 April) Headteacher Lynne Cathcart, the staff and children hosted a celebration showcase that took guests on a journey from 1976 to the present day.
This covered everything from fashion and music to special moments and memories through the decades, and it kicked off with a Top of the Pops-style musical medley of hits being performed from each decade.
Highlights of memorable events from each era were re-enacted by talented pupils from each year group, and it was party time for the grand finale - a selection of iconic dances.
Quote: We thought it was important to mark this special birthday and take a look back at 50 wonderful years of school life in Skelmorlie. The children have been at the heart of it all—planning the event, interviewing retired and current staff members, designing and creating posters and invitations, and driving forward their vision for the celebration. At the celebration showcase, pupils took us on a journey through the decades, exploring the music, fashion and memories that have shaped our school from 1976 to the present day. We also had stalls selling 50th anniversary items organised by our P5/6 and P6/7 pupils, including a commemorative 50th anniversary tea towel featuring hand-drawn portraits of all our children and staff. And we are hoping the time capsule will be discovered in five decades by future generations, giving them a snapshot of what life looked like in 2026. The staff and pupils put a lot of thought and energy into everything from the music choices to the costume design for Wednesday’s celebration, and I thank them wholeheartedly for their enthusiasm. I would also like to thank everyone who supported our special event and for coming along on Wednesday to help us celebrate this milestone anniversary.
