Safeguarding pupil spaces at Montgomerie Park Primary

The exterior of a newly built school building

Proposals have been approved to ensure there are sufficient spaces for local children to attend Montgomerie Park Primary School, Irvine, in the years to come.

From next summer, the intake will be limited to 32 children to manage the capacity at the school, leaving space for the roll to expand in future years, to accommodate catchment children from new homes.

In addition, the current number of spaces reserved at each stage, for catchment children moving to the area, will increase from two to four from August 2026.

With a significant number of new houses being constructed nearby, there is expected to be additional demand for places in future years.

Montgomerie Park Primary School was opened in August 2024 with 79 children over five classes. The school roll has increased significantly since then, with the current roll being 170 across eight classes, although it has capacity for additional classes.

One third of the school roll is made up of children who live outwith the catchment area, enrolled as a result of a successful placing request application.

In the years ahead, three separate housing developments could add up to almost 600 new homes to the area, meaning additional demand for spaces at Montgomerie Park.

Projections show that could result in around 100 additional catchment children registering for a place at Montgomerie Park Primary School by 2030, with that number potentially increasing in the following years.

Quote: It’s clear that the number of new homes and residents in the Montgomerie Park area means we have to act now to ensure there is sufficient capacity for children in the catchment area in the years ahead. As the new homes are built and more families move into the area, the intake at Montgomerie Park will rise and place demands on the school roll. The proposal to limit the P1 intake and increase the number of reserved spaces for local families is a sensible approach, allowing catchment-area children to be educated at their local school.”
