Residents can now read Council’s Best Value report

Members of the community at projects across North Ayrshire

North Ayrshire Council is continuing to focus on delivering services and improved outcomes for its residents and communities.

The Controller of Audit presented their five-yearly Best Value report to the Accounts Commission – which is the public sector watchdog - on 9 October.

It is based on evidence from earlier audits, including leadership of the development of new local strategic priorities, workforce innovation and transformation.

The Best Value audit acknowledges that the Council is “committed to the principles of best value and demonstrates a strong culture of continuous improvement”.

It also highlights that “good progress” is being made on strategic priorities and though facing significant challenges like many other local authorities, there are “effective financial management processes in place.”

Best Value audits focus on the delivery of Our Council Plan 2023-28 which is the council’s contract with its communities. The plan commits the Council to work in partnership to fulfil its aim of ‘A North Ayrshire that is fair for all’.

Quote: We welcome this report from Audit Scotland, and I would encourage as many residents as possible to either read it in person at one of the venues listed, or read it online on the Audit Scotland website. It is a very positive report that reflects well on us as a local authority, and we have bult well on the previous report from 2020. I would like to thank colleagues across all services for the great work they carry out on a daily basis, and for continuing to keep our residents at the heart of everything we do.

Quote from: Craig Hatton, Chief Executive of North Ayrshire Council

The Accounts Commission will issue recommendations shortly and these will be considered by Council in due course.

Elements of Council business that were highlighted include:

  • having good self-scrutiny through Our Council Plan
  • a leading approach to Transformation and
  • well-established relationships with our communities to help inform decision-making such as budget decisions.
