New Millport exhibition at Museum of the Cumbraes

The Garrison Museum of the Cumbraes, Millport, will host Island Record, a photography exhibition by renowned Scottish photographer Alan Dimmick, running from Saturday 5 July to Tuesday 26 August 2025. Opening this Saturday, the exhibition is free to attend and open daily from 10am to 4pm.

Island Record offers a unique visual chronicle of island life, capturing fleeting moments, quiet corners, and the rich textures of everyday existence through Dimmick’s candid and compelling lens.

Best known for his documentation of Scotland’s cultural and artistic landscape, Dimmick brings his distinctive eye to the Isle of Cumbrae, beloved by him and his family for three generations, recording its atmosphere with sensitivity and authenticity. The selection from his archive shown in Island Record are each accompanied by a short audio recording by the artist and are located on a map where the photos were taken.

Quote from: Councillor Alan Hill, Cabinet Member for Communities, Housing and Islands

Photographer Alan says: “I’ve been visiting Millport and the Isle of Cumbrae since I was a baby and return year on year with my own grown-up family and friends. Now to have the opportunity of a summer show in The Garrison is very meaningful for me.

“Thank you to North Ayrshire Council’s Arts and Culture team for the chance to share some of my work and photos on the island that means so much and has been such a huge part of my life experiences. I hope that visitors coming to the exhibition will be inspired to share their stories and revisit memories when they come over this summer.”

The audio clips from the exhibition alongside the photography can also be viewed on the exhibition website for anyone who can’t make it in person to the exhibition. Stay tuned for the link to this.

There will be an opening on Saturday 5 July from 1pm to 3.30pm and an artist’s talk on Saturday 23 August – details to follow in upcoming news story.
