Permit required to have bonfire on Council land

Graphic with Bonfire and words 'permission is required for bonfires on Council land'

Community groups looking to hold a bonfire on Council land this November are being reminded that they now require to obtain permission and a permit before doing so.

Applications should be received eight weeks before the event and all organisations must comply with conditions set out by the Council.

At a meeting of Full Council last year, a motion was passed that meant bonfire events taking place on Council land would now need prior consent.

In the absence of permission, anyone depositing materials for burning bonfires on Council-owned property will be liable to a Fixed Penalty notice for fly-tipping and a fee for the removal of fly-tipped items.

Anyone wishing to host a bonfire event, should visit our website and complete the online Event Notification Form. This is the first step in the permissions process and a member of the Events team will follow-up with you on the next steps.

Quote: Bonfire night is always a hugely anticipated one for families across North Ayrshire and we want everyone to have an enjoyable evening in a safe environment. The last thing we want to do is spoil anybody’s fun but we have to be responsible and do what’s right for people. That’s why we felt that an approval process was necessary so that we could monitor what was happening on our land and make sure any display would be safe for people attending. It must be remembered that fireworks and bonfires can be dangerous if not managed correctly. It can also be a significant stretch on our resources cleaning up after an event that has not been managed correctly and this is something we have to take into consideration as well. We would urge people to check out our social media channels for details of organised and official events.”
