Major works at Kilwinning Abbey complete

Reps from NAC, CBC Stone and Kilwinning Heritage

A major restoration project at one of North Ayrshire's most important historic landmarks has now been successfully completed.

The major programme of fabric improvements at Kilwinning Abbey Tower, carried out by Glasgow-based CBC Stone, has delivered significant conservation works designed to protect and preserve the historic structure while enhancing the visitor experience.

The completed works include extensive stonework repairs and repointing, replacement windows, a new flat roof and associated roof repairs, restoration of the clock faces and mechanism, together with a range of other conservation and safety improvements to safeguard the landmark's long-term future

The restoration project was supported through investment from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the Scottish Government's Place Based Investment Programme, Crown Estate Scotland and North Ayrshire Council. The funding package helped preserve an asset that is recognised as being of significant local, cultural and historic importance.

Representatives from Kilwinning Heritage, who operate the Heritage Centre within the tower, recently visited the completed facility to view the finished works firsthand. Volunteers were impressed by the quality of the restoration and the improvements that have been made to the building they have worked tirelessly to promote and protect over many years.

Quote: This is great news and fantastic to see that this restoration project has been completed. Kilwinning Abbey Tower is one of North Ayrshire's most recognised landmarks and a key part of our area's rich heritage. The completed works have not only preserved the building's historic character but have also ensured it can continue to be enjoyed by residents and visitors for many years to come. It was fantastic to welcome representatives from Kilwinning Heritage to see the finished project. Their passion and commitment to preserving and sharing the history of Kilwinning is invaluable, and these improvements will support their excellent work long into the future.

Built in 1816 on the site of one of the original medieval towers that formed part of Kilwinning Abbey, the tower remains home to its original clock mechanism and continues to attract visitors keen to learn about the area's rich history.

Within the tower, the Heritage Centre, operated by volunteers from Kilwinning Heritage, tells the story of Kilwinning and the surrounding area. Visitors can also enjoy guided tours of the tower, including the original clock mechanism and bell chamber, before reaching the rooftop viewing area with panoramic views across the Ayrshire coastline.

The restoration marks another significant milestone in the wider regeneration and enhancement of Kilwinning's historic core, helping ensure that one of the town's most treasured landmarks remains at the heart of the community for years to come.
