Irvine Royal Academy Pupils meet First Minister

A trio of pupils from Irvine Royal Academy had the chance to meet First Minister John Swinney and discuss a poverty-related issue close to their hearts.
Savanah Wilson, Jacob Anderson and Evie Alexander-Reid were proud to take part in Scotland’s first Children and Young People’s Cost of the School Day Summit 2025, held at The Social Hub in Glasgow and hosted by Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG).
And the young people - who form part of Irvine Royal Academy’s Cost of the School Day (COSD) group – discussed with Mr Swinney directly how to make education more inclusive and affordable for all.
Savanah, Jacob and Evie also played a key role in shaping the day – helping design sessions, leading discussions and representing pupil voices from across Scotland. During the summit, they delivered confident presentations and took part in engaging workshops.
The event provided a powerful platform for pupils to share their lived experiences and ideas for reducing financial barriers in schools.
Chiara Sheridan, Youth Worker at Irvine Royal Academy said: “We are so proud of our young people. They showed real leadership, confidence, and compassion, ensuring the voices of pupils are heard at a national level. Their involvement in this summit will help shape positive change across schools in Scotland.”
Quote: What an absolute credit these young people are and what an important voice they have in what is a hugely important issue for us here at North Ayrshire Council. We are constantly looking at ways that we, as a Council, can make the school day more affordable and we are delighted that we have the support of young people, like Savanah, Jacob and Evie, to try and make a difference to many young people and their families. We are sure they returned to Irvine Royal Academy full of enthusiasm and fresh ideas to support their ongoing work in making sure every pupil can take part fully in school life – no matter their circumstances.”
