History made at Ardrossan Campus development

History has been made at the site of the new Ardrossan Community Campus – with the first fully battery-powered pile driving rig used during construction.
Sustainability is at the heart of the new development and the piling rig that installs structural elements like concrete, steel, or wood columns into the ground to create stable foundations was deployed producing zero local CO₂ emissions and less noise pollution. It is the first time a fully battery-powered driving rig has been used in the UK.
The piece of machinery from Roger Bullivant Limited (RBL) features a replaceable battery pack which allows for a full working day of productivity.
RBL also utilised repurposed tubular steel and an electric forklift from Sunbelt Rentals, ensuring that site logistics aligned with the project’s sustainability goals. The total saving across the project equates to 1,622 tonnes of CO₂
The new campus is the first and key phase of the Ardrossan Coastal Quarter plans which will see the derelict site completely regenerated. As well as the state-of-the-art school campus - which will include secondary, primary and Early Years education provisions, public library and swimming pool – the vision for the wider site also includes the provision of new housing and commercial uses. This transformational redevelopment brings significant investment into a former vacant and derelict site within one of North Ayrshire’s most economically depressed areas.
Quote: We are committed to being a net-zero Council and it is fantastic that this is being met during construction of the new Campus. The facility, when complete, will not only be a great place for our young people to learn and thrive but will meet high standards for energy efficiency. This is a huge investment into the future of our young people and wider community. Not only are we creating a Community Campus, but also a range of other regeneration projects which will transform this derelict site and provide a major boost for the whole area.”

Prior to the construction, preparatory remediation and enabling works were undertaken to ensure the site was safe and ready for the new development.
The new campus is expected to be complete by Autumn 2027 and the Council, along with contractors Morgan Sindall Construction, will provide updates as work progresses.
