Funding will help to revive civic centre

Ardrossan Civic Centre will receive a welcome boost after North Ayrshire Council approved £85,000 in funding for repairs.

The money, from the Ardrossan Common Good Fund, will be used to address heating and accessibility issues.

The broken heating system is beyond repair and the platform lift is out of service, meaning the building can’t be used to its full potential in winter and there is reduced accessibility.

The community hub – which is a is an Ardrossan Common Good asset - is used by local groups, wellbeing services, outreach programmes and for elderly residents’ activities.

When Council met earlier today (Wednesday 11 Feb), elected members heard that the failed heating system would need to be replaced and a new lift installed to improve users’ experience of the building, ensure compliance with health and safety and accessibility requirements, and to reduce the risk of emergency closures.

A report presented to councillors explained that the cost of modernising the boiler and heating system is £30,000 and £55,000 is needed for the installation of a new lift and other associated works.

Quote: Community hubs like this one in Glasgow Street are crucial for the wellbeing of residents living in the area. They help to alleviate isolation, bring people together and provide a focal point for a range of activities. I am really pleased that the funding is being allocated to make the repairs, and I look forward to seeing the centre thriving in the months and years to come.

Council approved £85,000 of Common Good funding being used, leaving a balance of balance of £321,046.78.

The works align with the Council’s priorities of Wellbeing and Communities and Local Democracy by ensuring public spaces are well maintained and also encouraging strong, inclusive communities and respecting the local environment and cultural heritage.
