Free period products available across North Ayrshire

Ahead of International Women’s Day on Saturday 8 March, the council’s Period Dignity team is reminding residents and visitors that free period products are available in various council buildings across North Ayrshire.
Available discreetly, period products can be accessed free of charge in community centres, food larders, leisure centres, libraries and schools.
As part of the council’s climate change pledge to become a net zero local authority by 2030, the provision also includes free sustainable options in community larders. The eco-options were recently provided and include menstrual cups and reusable pads.
It is hoped that by providing sustainable options, residents may be encouraged to make the switch to more environmentally-friendly options and take the next step in their sustainable menstruation journey using products that are kind to the pocket and the planet too.
North Ayrshire’s Young People’s Champion, Councillor Chloé Robertson, has confirmed her support for the Period Dignity team’s strengthened commitment to provide a choice of free period products.
Quote: Providing sustainable products to our residents is a brilliant way to raise awareness and give people the confidence to make more sustainable choices. As the Young People’s Champion, I fully support the council’s wider free period products initiative particularly because tackling the climate emergency is a priority for young people. Having visible free period products in our buildings is important as it is crucial to tackle the de-stigmatisation of menstrual products particularly among young people. It is also encouraging to know that this service is available for residents in need, especially for individuals, families and carers who may not have the resources available to afford their own period products.
