Drivers asked to be mindful of parking restrictions

Drivers are reminded that parking violations – including parking on pavements – can mean a fine of up to £100.

The rules, which were introduced across North Ayrshire last summer, mean that anyone parked illegally and in contravention of local parking restrictions could face a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

The Transport (Scotland) Act 2019 introduced a pavement parking ban in Scotland and more local authorities across Scotland are now enforcing the measure.

Quote: The pavement parking ban is in place to ensure that footways are kept clear of vehicles to enable pedestrians to use them safely. This type of parking behaviour is dangerous to pavement users, and in particular, those with mobility issues, visual impairments or people pushing prams and buggies or using a mobility scooter. It’s clear that since we started parking enforcement last summer, there has been an improvement in parking behaviour in many areas and we would like to thank drivers for taking our message on board. There are still areas where pavement parking remains an issue and we would ask drivers to please park responsibly and be mindful of others.”

Quote from: Councillor Tony Gurney, Cabinet Member for Green Environment and Economy

In addition to pavements, drivers cannot park on common areas such as promenades and grass verges adjacent to the pavement which are used by pedestrians.

Where parking behaviour obstructs the passage of traffic then restrictions such as double yellow lines will be considered to regulate this.

In addition to pavement parking, PCNs may be issued for a range of offences including parking on double yellow lines; in a disabled bay without a blue badge; parking in a bus stop or taxi rank; and double parking.

Drivers are advised are advised to check for any parking restrictions when parking their vehicle.
