Council welcome re-opening of Millport Town Hall

THE re-opening of Millport Town Hall after extensive renovation works has been welcomed by North Ayrshire Council – and hailed a shining example of Community Wealth Building in action.
North Ayrshire Provost Anthea Dickson, Councillor Marie Burns, Leader of North Ayrshire Council, joined other Councillors, officials and partners as the new facility was officially opened at a special event on Wednesday (22 October).
The major revamp of the Town Hall was spearheaded by Millport Town Hall charity, with the support of North Ayrshire Council.
Over the last seven years, the Council has helped support numerous funding bids including £1.864m of Scottish Government funding from the Regeneration Capital Grant Fund (RCGF) in 2020 and £1.093m Islands Programme across financial years, alongside a contribution of £0.5m from North Ayrshire Council. The Council and North Coast and Cumbraes Locality Partnership also committed £200,000 through the Community Investment Fund (CIF) with further funding secured through the North Ayrshire Ventures Trust.
The Council has also provided knowledge and expertise to help the charity overcome any challenges they may have encountered along the way.
That partnership has led to this point – the reopening of the historic building which will help create jobs and support the community for years to come. At the heart of Community Wealth Building is community empowerment, protecting local assets to make them a benefit to as many local people as possible.
Quote: We are incredibly proud to have helped the amazing Millport Town Hall charity to achieve their dream of renovating this wonderful facility and bringing it back into use for the whole community., It is fantastic achievement and testament to the drive and commitment of the team of local volunteers, very ably led by the formidable Angie McCallum, over a number of years now. It was also incredible to hear first hand about the input and hard work put in by the volunteers which even included, tiling, painting and decorating in order to get the project over the finishing line in time for today’s opening.

Councillor Hill added: “This is community empowerment in action and should be an inspiration to other groups looking to do something similar within their own communities. It’s a privilege to have been here today and to have met so many local people who have worked tirelessly to make it happen. We’ve also had many officers involved in providing support and assistance helping the charity overcome many challenges along the way so a huge well done to them too.
“The Town Hall looks fantastic and the whole community should be very proud. The views from the flats are amazing and I love the way that so many of the original features have been preserved. I am sure it will be a popular, well-used facility for years to come.”
The building will house a beautiful main hall with its original domed Victorian ceiling restored in all its glory to provide the best acoustics.
Stage sound and light has been provided, as well as automatic blinds and stage extension with step access. The Sitting Room, which was once the old Lesser Town Hall, will be a space of welcome and the door is always open. Electronic shutters will allow access to the brand new community kitchen. Another hatch will open up to the occasional bar and servery.
Built in 1894, the Victorian building holds within it a wealth of memories and enjoys a central position in a magnificent natural setting. The School, the Library and a Cinema all found a home within the building until it closed in 2016.
Over the last seven and half years the Millport Town Hall charity was formed by the community and with extensive fundraising the building has now been regenerated into a fully accessible venue, capable of concurrent multi use.
