Council take over traffic management Gallowgate St

North Ayrshire Council will assume control of traffic management in a section of Gallowgate Street, Largs.

Earlier this summer, it became clear that the building at 24–36 Gallowgate Street was suffering significant ongoing structural movement. Structural scaffolding has since been erected to arrest any further outward movement of the facade.

These safety measures have meant that temporary traffic management arrangements had to be put in place on the adjacent stretch of the A78 at Gallowgate Street, which Amey has responsibility for.

As part of the partnership efforts to manage the situation, Amey have transferred the emergency traffic management arrangements to North Ayrshire Council on Tuesday 22 September.

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “We thank Amey for the work they have carried out to ensure that the traffic on what is a very busy section of seafront has been handled safely and efficiently.

“We will continue to work alongside Amey and Transport Scotland on the new traffic management plans which will come into effect shortly.”

The revised layout includes the reinstatement of the right turn onto the A78 for Southbound traffic exiting the Cumbrae ferry; a temporary pedestrian crossing to the North of the scaffolding; temporary bus stops opposite St Columba’s Parish Church; as well as additional signage etc to improve safety in general.

In the meantime, discussions are ongoing with the owners, their factor, and appointed specialists about the further work required to repair the building.
