Council seek views on next stage of Great Harbour plans

Residents, businesses and community groups are being invited to have their say on the next stage of exciting plans for Irvine’s Harbourside.

The £14 million Ayrshire Growth Deal Great Harbour project is already underway with works on the first phase – including the new Sea Monster Park and exterior repairs to the Pilot House – moving forward since starting earlier this year.

And now a public consultation into the next phase of works has been launched to gauge local opinion on the next stage that will complement the first phase – creating a unique waterfront destination, called the Maritime Mile.

This will focus on the improvements to Montgomery Street and Harbour Street and improving connections between the Beach Park and the train station. The proposals will show the vision for the area with the aim of reducing reliance on car use, improving connections between the town centre, railway station and the beach, enhancing waterfront views and creating additional outdoor spaces to attract more outdoor visitors.

Street furniture will also be refined across the area to make it more welcoming and appealing for picnics and generally being outdoors.

As well as the online consultation, the design consultants Atkins Realis will be holding a series of events to discuss and provide more detail.

Quote: It was only a few weeks ago that we were announcing the name of the playpark and it is great that this new facility will soon be open. Local people were a big part in shaping that phase of the development and we want it to be exactly the same this time round. Initial proposals have been prepared as part of the initial phase of consultation and we are keen to get feedback from the local community, businesses and visitors to the area. The project is being developed on a phased basis with the ultimate aim of transforming the Harbourside area and ensuring it is a go-to place for residents and visitors alike. The Ayrshire Growth Deal is of huge significant to this region and work is ongoing to ensure these exciting projects can be delivered.”
