Council praise for award-winning Shed team

A community team that has been championed and supported by North Ayrshire Council recently won a prestigious award.
Kilwinning Community Shed were recognised for their impact in the community at the recent Scotland’s Learning Partnership Adult Learners Week Awards.
In an era where Men’s Sheds are flourishing across Ayrshire, Kilwinning has taken a bold and progressive step by establishing a shed that welcomes both men and women. This has fostered collaboration, creativity, and connection across the community of Kilwinning.
The group were nominated by the Council’s Community Development team and were selected as a finalist – before being announced as winners at the special event held at the Scottish Parliament.
The Council helped the ‘Shedders’ turn their idea into a reality and have also helped with temporary accommodation as they look to find a permanent home, via a Community Asset Transfer of Blacklands Hall.
Quote: A huge well done to all those involved in what is a fantastic group who have made a massive contribution to their community. They have grown significantly over the last couple of years and taken on some great projects. But their biggest success is the impact on its people. Members report feeling more connected, overcoming loneliness and isolation, and building new friendships. The Shed promotes community spirit, lifelong learning, and improved health and wellbeing, making it a vital part of Kilwinning’s social fabric.”
Quote from: Councillor Alan Hill, Cabinet Member for Islands, Housing and the Communities
Kilwinning Community Shed has 92 active members and over 300 followers on their Facebook page. They are open twice weekly and hope to expand once they secure a permanent base. In just a few months, members have transformed their temporary space through donations, participatory budgeting, and sheer dedication—creating a functional, welcoming environment from an empty shell.
Current activities include wood crafting, model railway building, pottery, a music group, and art and crafts sessions.
