Consultation on 20mph speed limit is open

A public consultation has been launched to gather feedback from residents on North Ayrshire Council’s recent implementation of the National 20mph speed limit Strategy.
The online survey, titled North Ayrshire Council 20mph Public Consultation, opened on 1 July and you can complete it here.
It will remain open for eight weeks until 26 August and residents across all six localities are encouraged to complete it and have their say.
The Scottish Government has committed to working with local authorities to reduce the speed limit in our towns, cities and villages to 20mph where appropriate.
The driving force behind the change is to improve safety – with evidence showing when a vehicle collides with a pedestrian at 30mph, they are seven times more likely to die than at 20mph.
Through Scotland’s National 20mph Strategy, the government’s vision is “Slower today for a safer tomorrow”.
The Council is inviting feedback from residents, businesses and road users following the temporary introduction of 20mph speed limits across residential streets and selected urban areas.
The consultation aims to understand public views and experiences of the measures, including their impact on road safety, active travel and local communities.
Quote: Anyone who lives or works in North Ayrshire will have noticed that signs introducing the lower speed limit started being installed in December 2025 – and there are now more than 2000 of these across North Ayrshire. I would encourage anyone with an interest in our roads to get involved and complete the online survey. Taking part will allow us to gauge the impact of the change.

Feedback from the consultation will help inform decisions on the permanent implementation and future development of the 20mph programme.
If you would like a paper copy of the consultation, please phone the Council’s customer service team on 01294 310 000 to arrange this.
