Climate workshops arranged to raise awareness

A series of Climate Workshops has been arranged to help residents across North Ayrshire understand action they can take to support the drive towards net zero.

North Ayrshire Council’s Sustainability team is leading three hour-long information sessions within each of the six localities: Arran, Garnock Valley, Irvine, Kilwinning, North Coast and Three Towns.

The council declared a climate emergency in June 2019, setting a net zero emissions target for 2030. These events align with the council’s drive to address the level of area-wide carbon emissions and achieve net zero.

Communities have a huge part to play in working toward net zero, which is the term used to describe eliminating the amount of greenhouse gases we produce.

And the aim of the workshops is to identify climate actions communities can take while supporting local priorities.

The Sustainability team will speak to residents at the sessions to help improve people’s understanding and knowledge of what climate change is, what carbon emissions are and what is meant by “climate action”.

Each workshop will involve an interactive talk, discussions and activities as well as an opportunity to look at climate issues locally and identify support that is available to help residents lower their own carbon emissions.

Three workshops – for people living in the North Coast and Cumbrae – will take place in the Upper Room at Skelmorlie Community Centre, 13 Skelmorlie Castle Road, on:

  • Thursday 5 June from 7pm to 8pm. The theme is “What are we doing to help local communities adapt to climate change?”
  • Thursday 26 June from 7pm to 8pm. The theme is “What is my carbon footprint? What are the causes and impacts of climate change? and
  • Thursday 3 July from 7pm to 8pm. The theme is “What climate actions can we take, and how do they help our local priorities?”

The Sustainability team is planning to host similar sessions across the localities in the coming months, and these will be advertised in advance.

Quote: We all know that carbon emissions contribute to climate change and have a damaging effect on the planet. These workshops offer residents in each of the localities an opportunity to find out what action they can take at local level to help tackle climate change – which includes global warming, extreme weather conditions and rising sea levels. I would encourage as many people as possible to go along and speak to our Sustainability team.

Please note: The sessions are free to attend, there is no need to book a place and refreshments will be provided. If you would like further information, please email energyandsustaionability@north-ayrshire.gov.uk Please follow the council’s social media channels for details about future Climate Workshops in other areas.

Please note: The Sustainability team is also attending Dalry Open Day to speak to people about energy awareness and to promote funding support that is available to North Ayrshire residents. This CWP Energy event takes place at Dalry Community Wind Farm on Saturday 31 May from 10am to 3pm and entry is free. There will be children’s entertainment, craft and food stalls, tractor rides and wind farm tours.
