B781 to close temporarily for emergency repair work

The side of a road which has suffered a landslip

Motorists and commuters are advised of emergency repair works which will require a temporary closure of the B781 road.

Heavy rain in recent weeks has led to a landslip next to the road which connects West Kilbride to the B780 and on to Dalry.

The road has recently been restricted to one-lane due to a small landslip near Stairlie Woods earlier this month. However, further heavy rainfall has caused a larger movement of land adjacent to the road which requires immediate work to be carried out.

The carriageway will require to be excavated as part of the repairs. This means there will be no vehicular or pedestrian access through the site for the duration of the works. Access will only be available for works traffic and nearby properties.

The closure will come into effect at 7pm this evening (Wednesday, 26 November) and will run through to Friday 19 December, although the road may re-open sooner if works are completed earlier than expected.

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause but the safety of residents is our top priority.”

Drivers are asked to observe the diversions which will be in place. The diversion route is along the A78 south from West Kilbride to Ardrossan. At the Chapel Hill Roundabout, take the B780 north to the junction with the B781 near Munnoch reservoir.
