Ayrshire Lok Oi Association celebrates second birthday

North Ayrshire Provost Anthea Dickson has helped the Chinese community to mark a special second birthday.
Ayrshire Lok Oi Association, made up mainly of members of the Cantonese community, held its second birthday party in Irvine’s Volunteer Rooms on Monday, 18 May.
The colourful event included traditional food and music, a dance display and karaoke - with representatives from the Chinese Consulate in Edinburgh among guests.
The Association was set up at the Volunteer Rooms after two separate Chinese groups - Lok Fu Chinese Elderly Group and Oi Kwan Chinese Women’s Group - amalgamated.
This was achieved with support from the Council’s Community Learning and Development (CLD) team, which is part of the Connected Communities service.
Quote: Time really does fly by. It feels only like yesterday that the Ayrshire Lok Oi Association was launched. As Provost of North Ayrshire, I am fortunate to visit many groups and organisations across the area and witness the amazing work carried out by volunteers in our communities. Community groups, and the dedicated volunteers behind them, are truly the backbone of our towns and villages. It is wonderful to have the opportunity to recognise this work and to thank all those who contribute so much of their time, energy and care. The Lok Oi Association has been very successful in bringing together people from different ethnic minority communities and providing a welcoming and supporting environment for them. I thank you all sincerely for the important work that you do as a valued part of our community here in Irvine. I encourage you to continue engaging with other community groups and organisations and to share knowledge and experiences that will be mutually beneficial in promoting integration, friendship and understanding. I wish the Lok Oi Association continued success in the years ahead.
