Arran projects receive funding from Islands Programme

Three Arran projects are sharing more than £800,000 from the Scottish Government's Islands Programme.
The programme, working in partnership with local authorities, supports locally developed critical infrastructure projects that involve local communities to help deliver the National Islands Plan’s Strategic Objectives.
The Scottish Government announced today that the three successful projects on Arran are:
- Arran Youth Foundations, Youth Centre - £382,399 to build a new, bespoke replacement youth centre in Lamlash
- Brodick Hall Island Hub - £323,925 to transform this vital and valued island community space, bringing it into the 21st century through critical investment in the building’s fabric and
- Lochranza Securing a Future in Marine Tourism - £129,718 to help secure the future for the community by attracting more marine visitors by rejuvenating and extending critical marine infrastructure at Lochranza.
Quote: All three projects are fine examples of successful partnership working between Council services and the local community to secure funding and deliver regeneration and infrastructure projects. I know a lot of hard work went into the application process, so I would like to congratulate everyone connected to all three projects for securing this significant funding. Each project is very different, but they share similarities in the sense that they will offer great benefits for the wider Arran community and help to improve life for residents of all ages as well as visitors.

The funding announcement coincided with the Council hosting the autumn Convention of the Highlands and Islands in Brodick Hall.
This is being chaired by Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes, with the main agenda item being the Community Wealth Building economic model.
This sees wealth being retained locally thanks to local authorities and partners increasing employment and using local produce and resources – and North Ayrshire Council is considered to be leading the way in Scotland.
“As a local authority, we are really pleased to be hosting the Convention and to have welcomed all Scottish Government representatives and partner agencies to our beautiful Island of Arran”, added Councillor Hill.
Graeme Johnston, Youth Work Project Manager at Arran Youth Foundations, is delighted that the organisation’s application was successful.
He said: “This is transformational for us. What we have here at the youth centre is excellent, but we wanted to safeguard for the future and replace what we have with a modern facility that will stand here for decades to come.”
Robert Cumming, Secretary of Lochranza and Catacol Sea Society, added: “We are absolutely delighted to receive such a magnificent grant from the Scottish Government.
“We will be extending and refurbishing the pontoon, and also creating moorings in the bay. It is going to make such a difference to this village, and to the people who come in on yachts.”
