Appeal for Fair Trade Zone Group members

North Ayrshire Fair Trade Zone Group is appealing for new members to bolster its ranks.
Many people who have supported the group in recent years have moved out of the area, and new members are needed to replace them.
The Group’s committee is made up of residents from across North Ayrshire and they work voluntarily to raise awareness about how individuals, families and businesses can contribute to a fairer and more equal world by buying Fair Trade goods.
The Fair Trade movement promotes fairer trading conditions for farmers and workers in developing countries across the world, tackling poverty and climate change.
One popular way of supporting the movement is buying goods – like coffee, chocolate and fruit – that are stamped with the well-known green, black and blue Fairtrade symbol.
North Ayrshire Council works with the Group, which promotes activities locally and raises general awareness of the movement.
North Ayrshire is officially recognised as a Fair Trade Zone by the Fair Trade Foundation in recognition of the work that is done locally to promote goods - with Arran proudly being a Fairtrade island and Kilwinning a Fairtrade town.
Quote: I attend the committee meetings, and the Group has recently lost a number of members – so new members are needed to replace them. This is a community-based organisation that sees volunteers dedicating their time to promoting activities locally and raising awareness of the Fair Trade movement. It would be great to get support from Arran and Cumbrae as well as the mainland towns and villages.

Councillor Mary Hume, who also represents the Council on the Group, added: “As former headteacher of the first Fairtrade school in North Ayrshire – St Mary’s Primary School in Largs - and now Councillor for Kilwinning, which is a Fairtrade town, I have seen firsthand how our choices can empower communities.
“Let's work together to expand that impact with more volunteers for such a worthwhile group.”
Arthur West, who is a member of the Group, said he would love to hear from some new voluntary members who are interested in joining or finding out more.
“We have a proud history, locally, of supporting The Fair Trade movement – which works tirelessly to help some of the poorest people in the world.
“Anyone who wants to find out more will be given a warm welcome at one of our meetings, or can email me to discover more about what we do and what is expected of members.”
