People in North Ayrshire are encouraged to join national Spring Clean

Posted on 21 Mar 2024

People across North Ayrshire are being encouraged to sign up for a national challenge to address the country’s litter emergency.

Environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful’s annual Spring Clean takes place between March 15 and April 28.

Ninety per cent of people agree that litter is a problem across Scotland.

If you are one of them, then Keep Scotland Beautiful needs your help this spring.

The #SpringCleanScotland 2024 mass litter pick brings together people from across Scotland to help tackle our country’s litter emergency.

Last year more than 30,000 people across Scotland rolled up their sleeves and, equipped with litter pickers, bags and gloves, made a positive difference to their own neighbourhoods.

This year we’re urging people to get involved and contribute to an even bigger national response.

Keep Scotland Beautiful is calling for people across North Ayrshire to get involved.

With litter significantly impacting the cleanliness of 75 per cent of our streets and roads, #SpringCleanScotland 2024 will inspire action to reverse the deterioration in environmental quality in Scotland’s neighbourhoods.

Barry Fisher, Chief Executive at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “It would be fantastic for as many people as possible from North Ayrshire  to get involved.

“We know 85 per cent of people agree that they want to see more efforts to prevent litter in their area. It starts with us.

“No longer can we wait for someone else to pick up the litter we might walk past every day – so we are inviting everyone to organise a litter pick with friends, family, workmates or alone, or to join an event registered on our Clean Up Scotland map.

“Every action, however small, will help us reverse the litter emergency.”

Councillor Tony Gurney, North Ayrshire Council's Cabinet Member for Green Environment and Economy, said: “We are indebted to the support of community groups and volunteers who give up their time to litter pick and help us keep the area clean and tidy.

"Despite the best efforts of so many, littering remains an issue and is a blight on our communities and a source of frustration.

“We are delighted to be supporting this campaign. We hope it raises awareness about the issue and also brings people together to help clean up our communities.”

Keep Scotland Beautiful is pleased to be working in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy and Keep Wales Tidy to support the Great British Spring Clean.
