Head along to new exhibition at North Ayrshire Heritage Centre

Posted on 7 Nov 2023

North Ayrshire Heritage Centre is welcoming along visitors to check out some of its favourite treasures.

The latest exhibition at the Saltcoats museum is called ‘New and Unusual’ (and a few of our favourite things).

It features an eclectic mix of North Ayrshire’s history, with cases filled with amazing objects from the North Ayrshire heritage collection.

Provost Anthea Dickson officially opened the exhibition which showcases some remarkable artefacts.

Provost Dickson said: “It’s an honour and a privilege to open this wonderful exhibition which gives visitors a rare opportunity to see a fascinating collection of artefacts altogether under one roof.

“Throughout the exhibition, the items on display will change, so objects, video and artwork will continue to evolve and grow over the coming weeks and months, ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy.”

North Ayrshire’s Heritage team have hosted some fascinating exhibitions in recent times, including ‘Titanic: honour and glory’, ‘Little Black Dress’ - an exhibition delivered in partnership with Dalgarven Mill - and also with Ardrossan Castle Heritage Society to help them celebrate 10 years as a society.

The ‘New and Unusual exhibition’ is an opportunity to showcase an eclectic mix of some of the newest acquisitions to the North Ayrshire collection, alongside some of the team’s favourite objects. All the artefacts tell the story of North Ayrshire, from prehistoric archaeological finds right up to objects donated just last week.

On display, you will find Provost’s robes and memorabilia from bygone times, alongside a memorial book to those who lost their lives in the sinking of the HMS Dasher in 1943.

The exhibition also features a coffin template, a Saltcoats Victoria spittoon, and beautiful artwork by George Henry, George Houston and Sir John Lavery, all of whom have a connection to North Ayrshire.  There is vintage technology, including old radios, camera and a Gameboy Advance.

The exhibition will run until April 2024 and will be changed throughout this time, so please make sure to make a return visit.

The Heritage Centre, in Manse Street, Saltcoats, is open every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and the last Saturday of every month, from 9.30am-1pm, and 2pm-4.30pm. You can find out more online at www.naheritage.co.uk or search for North Ayrshire Heritage and Cultural Services on Facebook and X, formerly known as Twitter.
