Dykesmains Primary given gold star in inspection report

Posted on 22 Dec 2023

A SALTCOATS school has received a glowing report after an inspection by Education Scotland.

Staff and young people at Dykesmains Primary were praised in the review which hailed the school for its ‘calm, nurturing and purposeful learning environment’.

Inspectors visited in October and talked to parents/carers and children and worked closely with the headteacher and staff.

The inspection praised the highly effective leadership of the headteacher, and senior leaders, in raising attainment and achievement – pointing to the  robust monitoring and tracking of children’s progress.

The collaborative work of staff in continuing to improve learning, teaching and assessment was also highlighted in the detailed review.

And it went on to praise teachers for having high expectations and aspirations for children and have developed attractive, stimulating learning environments, which recognise and celebrate children’s work.

In both criteria, the school is described as being very good – the second top performance ratings

Head teacher Elizabeth Gribben said: “We are absolutely delighted with the report and it is so nice for all the staff to have this feedback from Education Scotland.

“We try our very best every day to make this the best school possible for our young people. It is great that the work of everyone at the school in making Dykesmains a safe, nurturing and purposeful environment has been recognised.

“The pupils are an absolute credit to the school, themselves and their families and it is a privilege to be their head teacher.

“I would like to thank all the staff for their hard work and we won’t rest on our laurels. Like all inspections, they pick up things we can do better and we will strive to get even better over the coming weeks and months.”

Councillor Shaun Macaulay, Cabinet Member for Education, said: “What a fantastic report and is testament to all the hard work carried out by the head teacher and all the staff at the school.

“A huge well done to all the young people who are making the most of the learning environment and thriving.  It’s great to see and I’m sure Dykesmains Primary will continue to go from strength to strength.”
