English for speakers of other languages (ESOL)

From beginner to advanced level.

Classes are free.

First Steps

Our First Steps classes are for people new to English and unfamiliar with the Roman Script (i.e. the alphabet we use in English and other European languages).  The level of this class is (SCQF level 0-1). 

Learners will work in small groups to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills while working on a range of topics based on interest and need.  Learners also have the possibility of gaining SQA accreditation and a recognised qualification if meeting certain outcomes.

Topics may include:

  • giving personal information for filling out basic forms.
  • shopping
  • family
  • GP / Hospital

Next Steps

Our Next Steps classes are for people with basic English but who are familiar with Roman Script (i.e. the alphabet we use in English and other European languages).  The level of this class is (SCQF level 1-2 / A1 CEFR ). 

Learners will work in small groups to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills while working on a range of topics based on interest and need.  Learners will work towards SQA accreditation level 1 accreditation and can gain recognised qualification for meeting certain outcomes.

ESOL Citizenship class

This course is held on zoom and is aimed at learners who wish to study for Life in the UK citizenship test.  Those not wishing to or needing to do a citizenship test may find this class interesting if they want to find out more about UK history and society.  To join this class, you must have an English level equivalent to SCQF level 3+ / CEFR B1+.  Spaces are limited.

ESOL for young adults

This course is aimed for ESOL learners aimed between 16-25 already with an English level SCQF level 2 -3 (CEFR A2-B1).  Class takes place on zoom.  Class is a blend of learner chosen topics and textbook work and is ideal for learners wishing to progress to college.  Spaces are limited.

Other support

One to one support, where appropriate, is available with the help of our volunteers.
