Difficult to dispose of items
When recycling, some items can be more difficult to dispose of than others. Refer to this guidance if you are unsure.
Asbestos and fibre cement board is commonly used in corrugated roof sheeting for garages.
If you think you have found asbestos, please follow guidance from Environmental Health.
Small quantities may be disposed of at the Shewalton Waste Transfer Station. We only accept cement bonded white asbestos from domestic household sources. For example, garage roofing and water tanks.
We don’t accept:
- materials that have been dismantled by a business or company
- asbestos from non-household sources
- non-cement bonded asbestos
Follow the guidelines on disposal as follows:
- Don't break, cut or saw the asbestos.
- Double wrap the asbestos in heavy gauge polythene sheeting.
- Seal the polythene closed using industrial tape.
- Call Shewalton Waste Transfer Station to give at least 24 hours notice of your arrival.
- You will be asked to provide your name, address, car registration number and the number of packages. If you are using a hire vehicle, you will need a copy of the hire agreement in your name and home address.
- Packages must be easy to lift into a skip. If you need two people to move them, you will need to bring a second person with you.

Car batteries are not accepted for disposal at our HWRC sites. Garages providing a battery replacement service should allow the collection and recycling of used car batteries. Auto shops may take old car batteries for recycling. Registered waste management companies, or motor dismantlers, may pay for old car batteries.
Fire extinguishers are not accepted for disposal at our HWRC sites. Contact the company listed on the extinguisher for details of how to dispose of it.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service provides the following information on the safe disposal of fireworks.
Used fireworks should be disposed of by soaking for at least a few hours in water. Then, place the used fireworks in a plastic bag and place in an outdoor general refuse bin.
If any fireworks did not work, do not return to them until after your display has finished. At the end of the display, faulty fireworks should also be soaked, bagged and binned.
Gas canisters should be returned to the place you bought them.
Only paint that is fully hardened can be disposed of within the residual waste skips at the household waste recycling centres or in your general waste bin. You should pierce the dried paint first before taking it to a recycling centre to make sure it's fully hardened. If any liquid is present, it can't be accepted.
Consider donating leftover liquid paint for reuse. Contact a local community group, charity, college, amateur dramatic society, sports club, neighbour, colleague, relative, or friend.
For larger quantities of reasonable quality paint, consider advertising on Gumtree, Freegle, Freecycle, or other local advertising options.
If you are unable to reuse the paint, find advice on how to harden paint from Zero Waste Scotland.
We are unable to accept petrol or diesel at our Household Waste Recycling Centres. Petrol and diesel is classed as hazardous waste and needs to be disposed of using a registered hazardous waste disposal service. Please see SEPA for information.
This includes pesticides, weedkillers and slug pellets. The council is not licensed to dispose of these waste products.
Contact the manufacturer for advice. These products should be used up as intended on the instruction label. Any leftover product should be taken to a registered waste management company for disposal.
Plasterboard can be disposed of at our Bartonholm HWRC site. There is a dedicated skip for this. This is not accepted at our Brodick, Kilbirnie or Largs HWRC sites.
Soil benefits the environmental, helps plants grow, and provides a home for tiny organisms. As a staple for the growth of crops it is a vital part of the food chain. If possible, try to use this in your garden. If not possible, take it to the Bartonholm HWRC site. Soil is not accepted at our Brodick, Kilbirnie, or Largs HWRC sites.
Tyres are not accepted for disposal at our HWRC sites. Garages providing a tyre replacement service should allow the collection and disposal of used tyres. Tyres can be taken to a registered waste management company for recycling.
