From 1 September 2025, we are changing the way bulky kerbside uplifts are carried out. Due to SEPA guidance, waste upholstered seating must be kept separate from other waste types.
From this date, the council will offer two types of separate bulky uplifts:
- uplifts of non-upholstered waste items such as bed frames, mattresses, electrical goods and white goods (like fridges and freezers), garden tools and lawnmowers, toys (for example bikes, trampolines, swings, climbing frames)
- uplifts of upholstered seating waste items such as upholstered chairs, suites, settees, sofas, sofa beds
Charges for bulky waste
Up to five waste items of non-upholstered items - £29.17, plus £5.83 for each extra item.
Up to five waste items of upholstered seating items - £29.17, plus £5.83 for each extra item.
A three-piece suite will count as three items. Four upholstered stools or chairs will count as four items.

- Tuesday - Saltcoats, Stevenston, Ardrossan

Or call 01294 310000 for the mainland and Cumbrae, or 01770 600338 for Arran. We will ask a few questions and book your collection slot depending on availability.
Where to put items to be collected
Once booked, place items on the kerbside (without blocking the pavement) before 7am on the collection day you have booked. The day of collection may be different for recyclables, general and upholstered waste items.
You must ensure that any upholstered seating that has incurred damage, been torn or broken is covered to prevent the release of fibres, for example a tear can be covered using tape, ripped cushions can be placed within a sealed bag. Staff will have the authority to refuse your items if they do not meet these guidelines.
Crews are not required to enter homes to remove items booked for collection and will not return for missing items.
Change or cancel your booked collection
Call us to change, or cancel, a collection up to 3pm on the working day before due collection date.
Private contractors carrying out work
Private letting owners and letting agents operate commercially. They have a duty of care to dispose of waste materials left at the premises. Contractors' waste cannot be collected as part of a household bulky waste collection. Before a contractor carries out works at your home you should check if they have a waste carrier's license. The contractor is responsible for removing any waste created.
