Public urged to beware of phishing scams
Posted on 14 Apr 2020
North Ayrshire Council is reminding people to be on their guard against potential scams during the Coronavirus pandemic.
Unscrupulous fraudsters are using the current situation to send emails which try to get people to part with their bank details.
One such phishing scam pretends to be from a legitimate Government account about receiving a Council Tax reduction.
These types of phishing scams are difficult to defend against, so awareness of how to spot such scams is the best defence.
People can visit https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/guidance/suspicious-email-actions for more information on how to spot suspicious emails they receive.
If any member of the public reports that they have received such an email, they can forward it to firstname.lastname@example.org. Once reported, they will assess it and take action to block it, where possible.
North Ayrshire Council has also produced an information guide about when we might call you and what we would and wouldn’t ask. It is available at: https://www.north-ayrshire.gov.uk/coronavirus/Call-information.pdf
