BetterOff team can help you to beat festive debt

Posted on 18 Jan 2019

Are you worried about debt after overspending at Christmas? Then the BetterOff North Ayrshire team can help you get back on track.

With many North Ayrshire households at risk of falling behind with their bills as a result of Christmas costs, the BetterOff team are encouraging people to make a New Year’s resolution to speak to them for budgeting and debt advice and help with making a plan for next Christmas.

BetterOff North Ayrshire is a local service funded jointly by the Big Lottery and the European Social Fund to help people over 16 who live in North Ayrshire to improve their financial circumstances.

Advice and support offered includes budgeting advice, reducing energy bills, help with energy debts and dealing with suppliers, affordable loans, benefits advice, getting the best deals through digital access and managing debt.

Since the programme started in 2017, BetterOff North Ayrshire clients are better off by a total of over £1.1million through interest saved on buying out high cost debts, debts written off, energy savings/grants, income maximisation and through people starting to build savings for the future.

Through working with a BetterOff case worker, the team can help you to manage your debts, improve your budgeting skills and - by maximising your disposable income - free up some cash to start saving for next Christmas.

Councillor Alex Gallagher, Cabinet Member for Economy, said: “It’s that time of year when people are feeling the strain from the cost of Christmas. The BetterOff North Ayrshire team can help local people free up some cash to save and help them to put a plan in place for next Christmas.

“It’s encouraging to hear from local residents who have engaged with the team and it’s making a real difference to them.”

Mrs J, single mother of five, a tenant with a local housing association, engaged with the team for help with unmanageable debts and to help improve her budgeting skills. She is now £90 per week better off and said: “I’m much less stressed and feeling positive about the future for myself and my family, thanks to the BetterOff North Ayrshire team. I’m now saving for next Christmas.”
