More blockers available as Council continue to stop bogus callers

Posted on 14 Feb 2019
THE campaign to end the cold-calling misery for some of North Ayrshire’s most vulnerable residents is set to continue.

This week more call-blocking machines have become available –and the Council’s Trading Standards team is looking to find them homes.

Over the last year, 152 of the devices have been installed across North Ayrshire – with spectacular results.

Of the 58007 nuisance calls received,   57504 – which is over 95% -  were blocked.

Data also shows that one resident received 176 nuisance calls one month and that residents in North Average receive double the UK average for these type of calls.

Councillor Alex Gallagher, Cabinet Member for Economy, said: “The call blocking machines have proved that they are successful.

“It is quite staggering the number of nuisance calls that come in and, make no mistake, they have a really big impact on our most vulnerable residents.

“We’ve even heard of residents afraid to answer the phone calls which makes them even more isolated, lonely and vulnerable.

“Our Trading Standards team do a sterling job and provide an invaluable service. The blocking machines are another really robust weapon in our ongoing fight against nuisance callers. If you know a vulnerable resident who would benefit from one of these machines we would urge you to get in touch.”
