Contracts extended for Modern Apprenticeships and Skills for Life Trainees

The Council has decided to extend the contracts of its current Modern Apprentices and Skills for Life trainees by three months.
Due to the impact of Covid-19, apprentices employed across the council have had their work experience and learning disrupted and this will continue for some time.
35 apprentices with the Council were due to complete during July and August but it’s been decided to extend the contracts of these young people by three months.
Also included are 17 Skills for Life trainees who commenced employment with the council during January of this year. Similar to apprentices, they have had their 6 month placements severely disrupted. Therefore, the Council has decided to either extend these trainees contracts by 3 months or offer trainees a guaranteedplace on the next Skills for Life programme in October 2020.
Councillor Alex Gallagher, Cabinet Member Economy, North Ayrshire Council, said: “" North Ayrshire Council places great value in the development of young people locally. The Modern Apprenticeship Programme is key to our ambitions in this area.
“It is hoped that by making this investment, our Modern Apprentices and Skills for Life trainees will have enough time to finish their study modules or training and have sufficient time to plan for the next move in their career.”
Over the last three years, the council has welcomed 240 young people into its workforce through its ambitious MA programme.
The programme offers young people the opportunity to kick-start a career in a variety of fields – from traditional options such as business administration and customer services to those more unique including countryside ranger and horticulture.
