Ardrossan Community Campus

The new community campus at the North Shore site in Ardrossan has been the subject to delay. The global pandemic and construction industry issues delaying the project's preparatory stages.

It will be the first part of an exciting package of works on the disused former Shell site within the town. A fantastic opportunity to develop a vacant site, benefit pupils, and deliver facilities for the community.

The most significant school investment in North Ayrshire’s history, the project will be for children aged 2 to 18. It will be created from the closure and merger of Ardrossan Academy and Winton Primary School and Early Years Class. The Campus will house a public library, and swimming/leisure facilities. A key component will be dedicated accommodation for the Health and Social Care Partnership Children and Families Locality Team.

Before the first bricks are laid, extensive remediation works will be carried out. This work has also been delayed as outlined above, but will be done in advance of the campus construction.

JM Architects have designed a facility that:

  • serves pupils, staff and the community
  • fits with the council’s drive towards becoming net-zero.

What's happening and what's in the pipeline

The full planning application for the Ardrossan Campus was submitted on 28 April 2023. Please note: if you have made representations, as part of the pre-planning process, that does not remove the right, or the potential need, to comment on the full planning application.

North Ayrshire Council’s Planning Committee have approved the proposals.

At a meeting on Wednesday, 20 September the Committee agreed to the plans which would see the construction of a facility comprising an early years, primary and secondary school with additional support needs at the former Shell site in Ardrossan.

The shared community facilities will also include a library, learning hub and indoor sports facilities including a swimming pool, sports hall, gymnasium, dance studio & fitness studio, outdoor sports facilities including two sports pitches and Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA). There will also be an outdoor learning landscape, recreational spaces and growing spaces, along with associated parking and infrastructure.

The application site is approximately 7.5ha in area, comprising some 60% of the Ardrossan Coastal Quarter site.

Planning permission was granted in 2022 (ref: 21/01161/PP) for the enabling works required to support the future development of the whole of North Shore.

North Ayrshire Council confirmed it had appointed contractor Morgan Sindall to complete the design of the new campus facility.

Ardrossan Community Campus will be a very energy-efficient building and will be designed to meet the Passivhaus Classic standards.

Passivhaus adopts a whole-building approach with clear measured targets, focussing on high-quality construction that gives a range of proven approaches to deliver net-zero ready buildings with an emphasis on user health and wellbeing.

Morgan Sindall are experienced in the delivery of Passivhaus projects and have recently completed Maybole Campus for South Ayrshire Council.
