Right stuff in the Right bin
Non organic items will contaminate a lorry load, resulting in it ending up as landfill. Your brown bin is for all organic waste from the garden such as grass cuttings, weeds and leaves but also for food waste from the home.
We won't collect bins with the wrong stuff in them. We'll put a red tag on your bin to tell you why your bin has not been emptied. You should remove the wrong items and the tag and put your bin out for the next collection day.
What can I put in my brown bin?
- grass cuttings
- dead flowers and plants
- leaves and bark
- hedges and branches
- windfall fruit
Tie branches and hedge in manageable bundles, no longer than 1 metre in length, and placed beside your brown bin. If you have lots of branches, please put out over a few weeks rather than all at once.
Food waste (cooked or uncooked and in compostable biodegradable bags):
- fish, meat & bones
- fruit & vegetables
- rice & pasta
- tea leaves, tea bags & coffee grounds
- egg shells.
What can't I put in my brown bin?
- plastic bags (non compostable or non biodegradable) - please don't put organic waste into ordinary plastic bags
- turf or soil
- wood of any kind
- food or drinks containers
- animal litter, bedding or faeces
If your bin is contaminated, with any of the above items, this will pollute the whole lorry load and our contractor will refuse to accept it. Please take care to avoid this happening.
Soil can only be disposed of at Bartonholm Recycling Centre.
What happens to the material collected?
Food and garden waste can be processed either through composting or digestion. This in turn can produce renewable energy and bio-fertilisers or high quality compost.
Brown bins are collected fortnightly, throughout the year. To find out your bin collection day, type your postcode into YourLocation.
Please put bins out at the kerbside before 7am on collection day. If you have difficulty putting your bin out you may be eligible for our bin pull out service.
If you forget to put your bin out for collection, put it out for your next brown bin collection day (we don't class this as a missed bin). Alternatively you can take your garden waste only (not food waste) to a Household Waste Recycling Centre.
We may not collect your bin at the same time of day. If, by the end of the working day, we have missed your bin on your collection day, you can report a missed bin.
