Who should pay?
Residents of a property, whether privately owned or rented, are generally liable to pay Council Tax. Empty properties are the responsibility of the non-resident owners or tenants.
The following residents are jointly liable to pay Council Tax:
residents who are married or living with a partner
residents who are joint owners or tenants
If a student is living with a non-student partner, the student cannot be held jointly liable for Council Tax charges.
When do I pay?
Council tax is a property based tax which runs from 1 April each year to the 31 March the following year. Your instalments are payable over 10 months from April to January.
Our payment date is on or before the 15th of each month. If you pay by Direct Debit you can choose from 3 payment dates of the 1st, 15th or 28th of the month.
How do I pay?
By Direct Debit
Direct Debit is the easiest way to pay your Council Tax. To set up your direct debit over the phone telephone 01294 310000. You’ll need your Council Tax Reference number and your bank account number and sort code ready.
You can also fill in our Direct Debit form (Word, 138kb) and return it to us.
Once this is set up you will receive a confirmation letter within 3 working days of setting up your Direct Debit instruction. All payments are covered by the Direct Debit guarantee.

Paying online is fast and secure.
You can pay over the phone using any of the cards listed above. Call our automated payment service (available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week) on 0845 603 0593. Please have your Council Tax Reference number and your debit or credit card details ready.
You can also pay using your debit or credit card by calling 01294 310000. This number is available during normal office hours.
If you choose to pay by standing order then complete the Bank Giro Credit form attached to your Council Tax bill and pass it directly to your bank.
Make sure the bank quotes the council tax reference number printed on your bill. Payments should be credited to the following account:

All cheques and postal orders should be made payable to North Ayrshire Council. Please write your Council Tax Reference number and the financial year you're paying for on the back of the cheque or postal order.
You shouldn't make cheque or postal orders payable to individual officers. Don't send cash or your payment card through the post.
If you wish to pay your Council Tax by cash then you should use the barcode printed on the top left hand corner of your bill.
To pay your Council Tax bill please take your bill and payment to any North Ayrshire Council collection office, Post Office, Paypoint or Payzone outlet and pay using your barcode, free of charge.
Many of the Paypoint and Payzone outlets are in shops and garages which are open late and at weekends. The Post Office accepts cash, cheque or debit card. Cheques made payable to ‘Post Office Ltd’. PayPoint Outlets accept cash only.
