Change of address or tenancy

Moving home

You must notify the council of your change of address. You can:

Moving into a property: open an account

To open a Council Tax account we need the following information.

If you own the property:

  • the date the purchase of the property was completed
  • the previous owner's forwarding address if known
  • the dates for any period the property was empty and unfurnished

If you rent the property:

  • the date your tenancy agreement started
  • your landlord or managing agent’s name and address
  • the dates for any period the property was empty and unfurnished

Moving out of a property: close an account

To close a Council Tax account we need the following information.

If you owned the property:

  • the date the sale of the property was completed
  • the new owner's full name
  • your forwarding address
  • the dates for any period the property was empty and unfurnished   

If you rented the property

  • the date your tenancy agreement ended
  • your landlord or managing agent's name and address
  • your forwarding address
  • the dates for any period the property was empty and unfurnished

Change of tenant

Landlords, or Managing Agents, must notify us when a tenant moves into, or out of, a property. Please complete and return a Change of tenancy form (Word, 131kb) or call 01294 310000.

Tenant moving out of your property

If a tenant is moving out of your property we need the following information:

  • the full name(s) of the tenant(s)
  • the date the tenancy ended
  • the date the tenant moved out of the property (if different from the tenancy end date)
  • the tenant's forwarding address
  • details of any other adults over the age of 18 who lived in the property and their relationship to the tenant eg son, relative

Tenant moving into your property

If a tenant is moving into your property we need the following information:

  • the full name(s) of the tenant(s)
  • the date the tenancy started
  • the date the tenant moved into the property (if different from the tenancy start date)
  • the tenant's previous address
  • details of any other adults over the age of 18 who will be living in the property with the tenant
  • whether the new tenant(s) is/are full-time student(s), if known 
  • whether the new tenant(s) is/are claiming Council Tax Reduction or Housing Benefit, if known
