Disabled Parking Bays

North Ayrshire Council provides designated parking for registered disabled drivers (blue badge holders| only), within local car parks and town centres.

We may, where appropriate, provide on-street parking bays outside residents homes where parking difficulties are experienced.  If you wish to apply for a disabled parking bay outside your house please contact the Independent Living Scheme in the first instance as we are unable to act until we receive an instruction from them.

  • What are the criteria for a disabled parking bay and sign?
  • You may be eligible to a designated parking bay and sign if the driver is a wheelchair user or where the exertion to walk would be likely to lead to a serious deterioration in health which may constitute danger to life.
  • I have been awarded a parking bay due to my disability but my neighbour keeps parking it . Can I prosecute?
  • If you do meet the criteria for a parking bay, please note that when it is provided no legal enforcement is possible. Parking bays are only a request for consideration by your neighbours and others and cannot be enforced by the Police or ourselves.
  • I have a blue disabled parking badge and neighbours consistently park in front of my property. What can I do?
  • There is no law to enforce that you should be allowed to park right outside your property so you therefore rely on the common courtesy of your neighbours. If appropriate you could discuss the problems you have with your mobility and kindly ask your neighbours as far as possible if they could leave you a space close to your own property. If you find that other people park outside your property, a sign advising that space is needed due to you having a disability may be enough to inform them and consequently they may then find an alternative place to park. You may need permission from the council to erect a sign.
