What cannot be put in the brown bin? |

We have adopted the wheeled bin system for the storage and collection of refuse.

Each household should have the proper bins to provide adequate storage. North Ayrshire uses a grey bin for domestic waste, a brown bin for organic garden refuse collection and more recently a blue bin for recycling material. All households within North Ayrshire will have a blue bin by August 2009.

You can check when your bin is due for collection by using the "About my property"  postcode search|.

Only terraced houses with no front garden or rear access are allowed to use refuse sacks.

Collection Point
Householders should place bin at the designated collection point on collection day with the lid closed and handles facing the road. The council will let you know the collection point.

Any rubbish left on the pavement on non-collection days is considered to be illegally dumped and our Enforcement Officers can issue fines on the spot for this offence.

Enforcement

Our Enforcement Officers monitor North Ayrshire for Dog Fouling, Litter and Illegal Dumping.

Dog Fouling is a concern throughout North Ayrshire and is not only a nuisance but carries a potential danger and health threat. The Dog Fouling Act (Scotland) 2003 makes it an offence not to clear up after your dog. Offenders will receive a fixed penalty of £40 increasing to £60 and if unpaid becomes a Civil Debt. A report can also be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal and may include a fine of up to £500.

The Environmental Protection Act 1990 makes it an offence for anyone to drop litter and failing to dispose of it in the appropriate manner. Litter is unsightly and when accumulated can be harmful to wildlife and the environment. Offenders will receive a Fixed Penalty of £50, which can increase to £2,500 and a report sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

Illegal Dumping is also covered in the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and our Enforcement Officers are able to issue offenders with a Fixed Penalty of £50 which can increase to £40,000 and a report sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

Elderly and people with a disability
Elderly and disabled people can apply for assistance in taking their bins out for collection.

You can obtain a Pull Out Application Form by calling 0845 603 0594. If you meet the criteria and are accepted onto the pull out scheme, a sticker will be sent to you to affix to your bin.

Our refuse collectors will then wheel your bin out and return it for you on your collection day.

Garden Refuse
A separate seasonal Organic Garden Refuse Collection service is available. You can obtain your brown bin |by calling 0845 603 0594

All material collected in your Brown Bin will be taken to be composted. Your bin should be presented for collection at the same point as your domestic bin. Please note that your brown bin should only be presented for collection if over half full.

Hedging and branches should be put into easy-to-lift bundles and placed beside the brown bin. Bags of garden rubbish placed next to your brown bin for collection will not be uplifted and should be kept until the next collection or taken to a recycling centre for composting.

What cannot be put in the brown bin?

  • Soil
  • Wooden fencing, doors etc
  • Rubble
  • Polythene sacks and plastics.

If there is any material in your Brown Bin that is not organic it cannot be collected, as it will contaminate the end product.

Please note that as the Garden Refuse is only a seasonal collection there is no Pull Out Scheme in place for the Brown Bins.

Will the Council clean my wheelie bin?
No. You are responsible for keeping your own bin clean.

What is kerbside collection?
Kerbside collection of recyclable material is a method of collection whereby you (the resident) sort your domestic waste according to type of material. You then gather these together in specially-provided bins/bags/boxes, which are collected on a regular basis by the council to be taken away and recycled. It means that you do not have to carry everything to your nearest recycling place, which may be difficult for you.

What happens if I put the wrong items in my recycling bins/box?
One contaminated bin can spoil an entire vehicle load so it is important that the correct items are put in the appropriate bin. If the people doing the uplift notice a wrong item in the bin, they will not take it.

My bin was due to be emptied on a public holiday. When will it be done?
If your bin day falls on a public holiday your bin will be emptied that day as usual, except over Christmas and New Year when handbills will be issued explaining any changes.

If my usual bin is only emptied every two weeks, won't it smell?
If you wrap and seal food waste in unwanted plastic bags before placing in the bin, then it shouldn't smell. Similar projects throughout the UK have demonstrated that food waste can be safely and hygienically stored for extended periods in a lidded, wheeled bin.

Does the Council supply sacks for rubbish/recycling?
Yes, you get a supply of bin bags once a year delivered to your door.

Can I put whatever I want out for my normal rubbish collection?
You may put general household waste into your normal rubbish, but NOT items such as masonry or bricks, car batteries or corrosive chemicals etc. Please try and recycle as much as you can instead of placing it into the regular rubbish collection.

Can I put extra bags out for collection beside my bin?
No. It is Council policy that we cannot take extra bags beside a bin.
