We have created an RSS feed of the latest Council news and Content for our visitors. You can subscribe to this for free and be alerted when new news stories or pages are added to the Council site. We hope that visitors will find a facility like this useful, and plan to expand their use throughout the site in the near future.
What is RSS?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication), also known as news feeds, is a format for publishing web content using a technology called XML. Instead of showing the full content of a page, RSS provides a summary to help you decide if you want to visit the page that holds the full content. The summary usually consists of a title, a brief description, and a link to the full page.
In order to make use of RSS, you will need a piece of software called a news reader. A news reader checks the feeds, and alerts you when new articles have been added. The latest versions of web browsers like Internet Explorer |and Firefox| have the ability to detect, read and save news feeds. Alternatively, you can use dedicated news reader known as an aggregator. These are separate downloadable programs that allow you to read multiple feeds from any number of websites, all in one place. Some of the most popular news aggregators are listed below.
For Windows
RSS Bandit|
Newzcrawler|
FeedDemon|
For Mac OS X
NewsfireRSS|
Web-based
Newsgator|
Feedzilla|
How do I use RSS?
Once you have chosen a news reader or aggregator, all you have to do is to decide what content you want it to receive. For example, if you would like the latest North Ayrshire Council News, go to the Council homepage and you will notice an orange button
with a subscribe link inside the "Latest News box". Click on this and you will immediately be taken to a page showing the news, with a subscribe link. If you are using Internet Explorer or Firefox, you can click on this link and the news feed will be added to the browser favourites (in IE) or bookmarks (in Firefox). If you are using a news aggregator like RSS bandit, you will need to copy and paste the feed link from the browser address bar and create a new feed in your reader.
