Winter Road Maintenance

Latest Roads Winter Information - View our latest winter service decision

We aim to treat as many roads as possible when snow and ice is forecast to keep drivers and pedestrians as safe as possible. We operate a priority system for both roads and footways that ensures that the most important and busiest routes are treated first. From October through to April we have a fleet of gritting vehicles with snowploughs on 24-hour standby and staff monitoring weather forecast information.

North Ayrshire Council has an obligation to take reasonable steps to prevent snow and ice endangering the safe passage of pedestrians and vehicles over public roads, which includes carriageways, footways, footpaths and pedestrian precincts. The Winter Service Document (PDF 143Kb) outlines the Council's procedures put in place to fulfil the Council's duties.

Further information on our winter maintenance procedures and the location of amenity grit bins for public use can be found in our Winter Information Leaflet (PDF 203Kb). Grit bins are also placed throughout our area, please use them when necessary to help clear snow or ice from footways outside your house. You can contact us in expectional circumstances or in an emergency if you need your roads gritted.

If your community would benefit from a grit bin you can apply by downloading our form or by calling 0845 603 0594. Grit Bin policy and application form - (Word 32Kb)
