Introduction of special uplift charges for household waste

New special uplift charges will take effect from 1st April 2010 .

From April 1 2010, residents will be charged £12 for special uplifts of up to five items.

North Ayrshire Council is amongst the few remaining local authorities in Scotland to implement the special uplift charges, with 25 of the country's 32 councils already charging for these collections.

The Council will collect up to five specified household items for £12 with any additional items costing £2.40 each.

These include items that could be taken when moving house such as furniture, white goods and electrical equipment.

Fixtures and fittings such as kitchen units, bathroom suites and boilers must be disposed of by the householder by either taking it to the nearest recycling centre or arranging a contractor to uplift it.

Items can be taken to Recycling Centres at Station Brae, Dreghorn, Haylie Brae, Largs, Bartonholm, Irvine, free of charge.

However, residents are encouraged to take advantage of the voluntary sector and charitable organisations that will put good quality unwanted furniture to good use.

Cleansing Controller for North Ayrshire Council, Yvonne Hunter, explained:

"We are one of the last councils to introduce a charge for special uplifts and this is down to a number of factors such as a rise in landfill charges and the national waste strategy.

"However, you can contact local charities who may be able to re-use your items"

To arrange a special uplift on the Isle of Arran please call 01770 600338.  For all other North Ayrshire residents please call 0845 6030594.
