Free permit system in place for Household Waste Recycling Centres

Please note Largs Recycling Centre will be closed for 12 weeks from Sunday 4 March 2012 for major improvement works to allow a wider range of waste material to be separated for recycling.

North Ayrshire Council's Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) allow householders to dispose of small quantities of bulky household waste and access a wide range of re-use and recycling facilities.

Commercial waste can not be deposited at Household Waste Recycling Centres and to control this the Council have introduced a free household waste permit scheme and height barriers to its HWRCs.

Trade and Commercial Waste is the responsibility of the trader or commercial operator producing the waste.  Any person who disposes of commercial waste at a Household Waste Recycling Centre may be committing a criminal offence and may be prosecuted and become liable for the cost of disposal.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) monitors vehicle number plates and operates at all of North Ayrshire's HWRCs to deter illegal use.  For more information on the legal requirements for carrying or disposing of commercial and trade waste visit www.netregs.gov.uk. You can also find information on our Commercial Waste page.

Permits are required for anyone wishing to visit a centre with vehicles other than ordinary cars, small 4x4's , MPV's and People Carriers less than 6' 3" (1.9m) in height.  The permits will come into force from Monday, 15th August for all of the Council's HWRCs.

If you want to dispose of waste using a van, pick-up, single axle (2 wheels) trailer (less than 1.8m x 1.2m) or a mini-bus (8-11 seats) or your vehicle is more that  6' 3" (1.9m) in height you must make an application to the Council for a free waste permit.

If you have a single axle trailer that is over the size limit, please contact us for further advice and assistance.  Double axle trailers are not allowed on site.

For more information on the free permit scheme and to find out if you require a permit, you can download our User Guide (PDF 7.78Mb).
