Private Water Supplies within North Ayrshire
Due to their location not all properties have a public water supply; some must make their own private arrangements, either alone or in co-operation with their neighbours.
In North Ayrshire there are about 280 private supplies, the majority of which are in Arran. The Council has a duty to ensure that these supplies are identified, categorised by risk, and in the case of those supplies with commercial use (Type A supplies) they must be tested annually to ensure compliance with standards of wholesomeness.
You may be Eligible for an Improvement Grant
Improvement Grants of £800 per property are available where supplies are failing the prescribed bacteriological and/or chemical parameters. For further information about grants and the standards which are required to be met please contact Environmental Health.
Private supplies tend to be unreliable and need much supervision and maintenance which is not always provided by owners. A connection to the public water supply is generally a better and safe option.
