Breeding of Dogs – All you need to know

Under the Breeding of Dogs Act 1973 a licence is required for dog breeding establishments. This means any premises, including a private house, where more than 2 bitches are kept for the purposes of breeding for sale or where a business of rearing puppies is carried on.

There are similar requirements to the Animal Boarding and Riding Establishments Acts in terms of welfare, safety, food, exercise etc. Environmental Health Officers are the primary consultee but vets may be involved if deemed necessary.

To apply for a licence the application form can be downloaded, completed and returned with the licence fee| to the Licensing Office.
